isn't it ironic?

i just finished reading Carrie Fisher's Wishful Dreaming. It got great reviews everywhere, but i'm disappointed.

Fisher takes her issues with drugs, drinking and weight and makes self-deprecating jokes. I'm not a fan of dark humor when dealing with addiction.

i think humor masks the issues. we use our extremely clever wit, and we outsmart ourselves. through our laughter, i think we deflect. dark issues become surfacey. this makes it harder to get well.

it's not laughable. there's nothing to be self-deprecating about.

i love humor. i love to laugh. but i love the hearty, happy laugh. the ironic, snide laugh - not so much.

I agree with you that it is hard work to read about something so painful when it is written in a jocular manner. But I can also see that some people have to cope with their demons with humour.

My skin crawls when I hear comedians making jokes about EDs, yet I also know I inject humour into my own conversations about it. But perhaps I am allowed to, as I am referring to myself - not another person. And I have experience of it. Perhaps that it what galls. Why should someone poke fun at that which they don't understand?

great point! late night comedians make me cringe when they make fun of others (except our president and his cronies) - we're all human, and we all hurt.

the problem with my humor about my ED, is that it's always cruel. i make fun of myself in an unkind way. it's not loving, fun humor -- it's mean. and i take it seriously.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

I agree--I also read her memoir and didn't find it funny both because it minimized the struggles and b/c it really just wasn't that funny!
